Tour Description & Itinerary:
Embark on a unique cultural journey to the vibrant Italian Market of Shalateen, nestled in a charming desert oasis south of Marsa Alam. Your adventure begins with a morning pickup around 6:00 AM from your hotel, followed by an air-conditioned drive through the scenic Eastern Desert, passing rugged mountains and occasional Bedouin villages.
Around mid-morning you’ll arrive in Shalateen, a welcoming town that comes alive on market day. Wander through narrow lanes lined with colorful stalls offering handcrafted pottery, intricate jewelry, traditional textiles, and vibrant carpets. The air is filled with the scent of spices, Arabic coffee, and freshly baked flatbread being sold by local women who may invite you to sample their cooking.
Next, head to the heart of the market where Italian influences meet Egyptian Bedouin traditions. Here you’ll find fresh produce and imported Italian goods—from cheeses and olives to cured meats and pastries. Sip on mint tea while chatting with local merchants about their crafts and the way of life in this remote community.
A delicious lunch is served at a local guesthouse—a hearty spread of roasted meat or vegetarian tagine, rice, salads, flatbread, and seasonal fruit. As you dine, enjoy stories from your guide about the history of Shalateen, its agricultural development, and the unique blend of cultures it supports.
In the afternoon, stroll through Shalateen’s agricultural showcases—greenhouses with fresh vegetables, fruit orchards and date palms. Learn how this desert town cultivates produce in harsh conditions using modern irrigation and sustainable practices. You’ll also visit a date farm and sample freshly harvested dates.
Finally, around late afternoon, it’s time for the return drive to Marsa Alam. You’ll arrive back in time to unwind before dinner, with memories of a rich cultural experience in Egypt’s desert frontier.
